Of course, maybe martial music isn't the best when dealing with DC drivers!

I hadn't yet followed the story of the 79th NY once they left Northern Virginia. Interesting to see they were at Knoxville. They had a band which marched with them through the streets of NYC and, once they were off the trains, down Pennsylvania Avenue past President Lincoln on the front steps of the White House.

But they doffed the kilts and left the band behind when they marched into Virginia for 1st Bull Run. And though they had the kilts when they marched into Knoxville in the fall of '63, there was no band accompanying them.

They were, perhaps uniquely, provided such things as kilts, trews, and glengarry bonnets for ceremonial occasions by the Caledonia Society of NYC. They undoubtedly had drums and bugles at Knoxville and probably even a fifer or two. But, alas, no piper. Unfortunately as, on that occasion, they could easily have found a Reb or two to pay him.Dick Stanleyhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/08928787462157704978noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2972158399131973757.post-78668687808361607402010-12-02T16:47:10.945-05:002010-12-02T16:47:10.945-05:00I haven't heard of them, but just checked the ...I haven't heard of them, but just checked the webpage. Very well done.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.com
